Somatic Therapies
Helping you heal the emotional roots of chronic illness and trauma through a body-centered approach.
Understanding Somatic Therapy
Healing is not just something that happens in the mind—it lives in the body. Somatic therapy is a gentle, body-centered approach that helps you reconnect with your inner experience, release stored stress and trauma, and restore a sense of balance, safety, and wholeness. At Cathy Armstrong Wellness, somatic work is offered as a deeply respectful and intuitive process that honors your pace, your story, and your innate capacity to heal.
Somatic therapy focuses on the connection between the body and mind. When we experience stress, trauma, or overwhelming life events, the body often holds onto these experiences long after the moment has passed. This can show up as tension, anxiety, fatigue, emotional reactivity, or a sense of disconnection. Rather than relying only on talking, somatic therapy gently brings awareness to physical sensations, movement, breath, and nervous system responses. This allows unresolved experiences to be processed and released.
Mind-Body Connection
Focuses on the intricate link between your mental state and physical sensations.
Trauma Release
Helps release the physical and emotional residue of past traumatic experiences.
Nervous System Regulation
Holistic Counseling guides you in restoring balance and calm to your nervous system.
A Holistic, Integrative Approach
Cathy Armstrong brings over three decades of experience in counseling, along with training in somatic therapy, trauma-informed care, and spiritual integration. Sessions may thoughtfully incorporate elements of mindfulness, meditation, interpersonal neurobiology (IPNB), Hakomi-informed principles, Ericksonian approaches and gentle hypnosis, and faith-based or spiritual perspectives (when aligned with your beliefs). This creates a personalized path to healing that honors the whole person—body, mind, and spirit.
Is Somatic Therapy Right for You?
Somatic therapy may be especially helpful if you:
- Feel “stuck” despite insight or talk therapy
- Experience chronic tension, pain, or fatigue with emotional roots
- Have a history of trauma or overwhelming life experiences
- Struggle with anxiety, panic, or nervous system dysregulation
- Desire a deeper, more embodied healing process
You do not need prior experience—just a willingness to gently explore. Expect a deeply respectful and intuitive process that honors your pace, your story, and your innate capacity to heal.
What to Expect in a Session
During a somatic therapy session, we'll work together to gently bring awareness to your physical sensations, breath, and subtle bodily movements. This is not about forcing anything, but rather about allowing your body's innate wisdom to guide the process. You might experience moments of deep relaxation, release of held tension, or a newfound sense of connection to yourself. It's a collaborative exploration where your comfort and pace are always prioritized, creating a safe space for profound healing and integration.
